RFmondial supports successful DRM field test of US Coast Guard in Alaska

RFmondial supported the US Coast Guard in conducting a year-long field test of the DRM system in Alaska to investigate how a single transmitter can provide coverage for the arctic. The field test demonstrated that DRM is capable of transmitting maritime and navigation safety information over a wide geographical area. Underway vessels were able to receive detailed images such as wave, surface and wind forecasts as well as ice maps. Text based messages and latest news were received as well as various Alaskan meteorological data and virtual aids to navigation.
The field test setup contained amongst others the RFmondial DRM ContentServer which fetches and formats the data, and two RFmondial professional measurement receivers RF-SE19.
The detailed final report of the US Coast Guard finds DRM to be a good technology for a cost effective method to disseminate marine and navigation safety information and stated that DRM might be the path forward!

DRM Trial in Westbury, South Africa, with RFmondial Equipment

The Johannesburg community station WECODEC (Westbury Community Development Centre Trust), with support from the BBC World Service and Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits initiated a trial broadcast project to evaluate DRM Digital Radio Mondial in the VHF Bands (also known as DRM+) between March and October 2017.
As loan from the BBC WECODEC received a complete DRM transmission / broadcast chain, containing also RFmondial equipment. The RFmondial DRM ContentSever (based on Fraunhofer technology) was used for audio / data encoding and multiplexing. The RFmondial DRM Modulator prepared the signal for the VHF transmission. The RFmondial DRM Monitoring Receiver RF-SE12 was successfully used to setup the transmission equipment and perform the field trials.
Technically, this trial gave promising results with regards to coverage compared to FM in both urban and rural environments. Also it evidenced that there was no interference between DRM and FM in a real live broadcasting environment. For DRM+ it was the first time to be tested on the African continent. RFmondial at First DRM European Workshop "Flexible and Complete Digital Radio for Europe"

The Digital Radio Mondial (DRM) Consortium and the German DRM Platform held a most comprehensive European workshop hosted by Fraunhofer IIS in Erlangen, Germany from 6th to 7th April 2016.

The participants urged all stakeholders of Digital Radio in Europe to embrace publicly the duality and complementarity of the open DRM and DAB standards as the complete Digital Radio solution for Europe. This means a digital future for all broadcasters, offering more programme choice to listeners, extra multimedia services with text and images and increased energy savings.

During this workshop, benefits and opportunities of DRM were shown with practical applications by the participants. On that occasion, also Dr. Jens Schroeder, Managing Director of RFmondial, demonstrated how to provide DRM services in the crowded FM band compatible  with all the existing FM stations. High Technology – High Accuracy: RFmondial presents its RF-SE19

DRM member RFmondial recently announced a new DRM monitoring receiver model within its RF-SE series.

The RF-SE series is known for its high performance frontend with preselector filter banks and a digital direct-down conversion system approach. To suit the specific needs of the desired application, the well-proven digital base-band decoder and various modular blocks are available: for example, RSCI capability, audio and multimedia decoder, alarm feature, web-interface as well as RFmonitor connector. The receiver is available for DRM30 or DRM+.
RFmondial is pleased to announce a new innovative model, based on the highly successful RF-SE12. The new RF-SE19 has a smaller form factor, using proven high-quality receiver technology.  The compact form factor of only 1 RU makes it ideal for mobile field trials and saving rack space.

“Even though the RF-SE19 is much smaller, it still has the same comprehensive user interface as the RF-SE12 model”, - Jens Schroeder, Managing Director.
Albert Waal, Head of Hardware Development, introduced the new model at Broadcast Asia 2015, where many of the broadcast professionals were very excited about the new compact design. The next opportunity to view it is at IBC in September: “See for yourself and get to know the RF-SE19!” The RFmondial team will be pleased to show it you.  Contact This email address is being protected from spambots.
